ART PROVIDES WINDOW INTO NEW THINKING ON CLIMATE CRISIS

Published on: 1st September 2025 by Claire Haigh.

Greener Vision today publishes a report calling for new thinking on the climate crisis and a transformation of our relationship with the environment on which we depend.

2024 was the hottest year on record, with the global average temperature reaching 1.55°C above the pre-industrial average[i].  Millions of people are struggling with the impacts of worsening extreme heat.  No country is safe.  Even historically cool nations are experiencing deadly heatwaves supercharged by the climate crisis[ii].  Europe is heating up more than twice as fast as the global average.[iii]

However, there is no sign that the world has reached a peak.  Global greenhouse gas emissions continued to rise in 2024.[iv]   Only 28 countries have submitted carbon-cutting proposals to the UN ahead of the COP30 climate summit in November[v].  The world is on track for 3.1°C heating, which would have catastrophic consequences[vi].

The Tabula Project: A Blueprint for Change sets out how our thinking needs to change if we are to rise to the scale of the climate challenge.  We are wired to focus on immediate self-interest, but the result is a lack of systemic wisdom.  We need to think and act in a global long-term context.

The report is published ahead of an exhibition of paintings and event series this autumn exploring new approaches to tackling anthropogenic climate change.

Claire Haigh, Founder & CEO of Greener Vision commented:

“The window to avoid irreversible climate impacts is rapidly closing.  However, at a very time that the world needs to step up its efforts to reduce emissions, climate policies are being met by a global green backlash.

The UK’s leadership and commitment to net zero must remain unequivocal.  We need to strengthen the party-political consensus on net zero and we urgently need to foster an informed, evidence-based and balanced public debate”.

Professor Mette High, Director of the Centre for Energy Ethics at the University of St Andrews commented:

“As energy systems change, so will energy politics, economics and social life.  What kind of world do we envision for ourselves and for others?  How do we balance our energy demands with our concerns for anthropogenic climate change?

The Centre for Energy Ethics is pleased to be partnering with Greener Vision to present an exhibition of The Tabula Project and accompanying series of events to explore innovative approaches to addressing one of the most profound and urgent challenges facing humanity today.”

Notes to Editors:

  1. The Tabula Project

The Tabula Project is a 30-year creative endeavour that aims to provide a new perspective on the mind.  The project started with the assumption that we won’t solve our most intractable problems with the same thinking that created them.  The paintings depict states of consciousness and thought, and fundamental questions of our existence are explored in the workshops. By examining current thought patterns and clearing away the main obstructions to progress we can begin to build a new paradigm.  For more information visit www.thetabulaproject.com

  1. Greener Vision

Greener Vision is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to encouraging the switch to a greener future.  Greener Vision applies insights from The Tabula Project to the challenge of tackling climate change.  The Foundation for Integrated Transport provides grant funding to support Greener Vision’s work.  For more information visit www.greener-vision.com

  1. The Tabula Project: Exhibition & Events Programme 2025

The Tabula Project paintings will be on display at St Andrews Botanic Garden 13th-17th October and via an online gallery hosted by the Centre for Energy Ethics in October and November 2025.  The online event series will include contributions from leading figures from the worlds of politics, business and academia.  Students at the University of St Andrews will participate in Socratic dialogues with the artist.  The programme can be viewed here.
